Hi there!
This is my first blog post of any kind ever. We’ll see how much I actually end up posting, but I’ll try to do it at least once a week.
I flew out of SFO on June 18 at about 10pm. Flying with Air New Zealand was definitely the right choice! It was a 13 hour flight and we were fed 2 meals (halfway decent ones), had tons of options for movies and TV shows and got free drinks. Two glasses of wine (my first legal drinks!) and the time flew by.
I arrived in Auckland at six am on Thursday June 20th, effectively skipping a day and flying from summer to winter. We were at the airport by the man who will run our orientation, self-described as ‘the best looking and most modest person of some maturity in the arrivals hall’. He put us on a van headed to the hostel and on the way there we got our first look at New Zealand as the sun rose.
I’m here with EAP, UC’s study abroad program, so all the other people I've met so far are other UC students. I've met people Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Davis and Irvine. After getting to the hostel, we found out that our rooms weren't yet ready and decided to walk to Grafton Hall, where we told our meals would be served. Of course, we got lost and what could have been a ten minute walk took about an hour.
For the rest of the day we wandered around the area immediately surrounding the youth hostel and noticed how it only seemed to rain when jackets had just been put away. The upside- lots of rainbows!
After dinner tonight we’ll be meeting everybody as a group and officially beginning our five-day orientation.
